“This event is an opportunity for our community to gather and not only raise awareness about early detection, but also to celebrate and support those affected by breast cancer,” said Julie Hartshorn, Community Health Planner. “Breast health care is very personal and individualized. We want to equip community members with the information and confidence they need to prioritize their health.”
The evening will combine expert presentations with practical resources. Vicky Mathwig, M.D., from Intermountain Health St. Mary’s Regional Hospital, will discuss breast cancer risk factors and the importance of early detection. Dillard’s Certified Bra Fitter Cazz Davis will share insights on proper bra sizing and offer free, personalized fittings. Attendees can also access support with insurance navigation, schedule upcoming mammograms, and enter to win raffle prizes.
All community members are encouraged to attend, especially women over age 40.
Importance of screening
According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammograms are the best way to screen for breast cancer as they can identify small lumps or discreet changes before they are felt by hand. When found early, 99% of women survive breast cancer.
Women at average risk are recommended to begin routine mammograms at age 40. Individuals should consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best screening schedule for them.
